No. There is no indication that dosage reduction is necessary in the elderly.

Can Senokot be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding?

It is important to seek advice from your doctor before using medicines in pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Is Senokot suitable for diabetics, and those with special dietary needs?

Senokot tablets have negligible sugar content. However, the syrup formulations contain sugar and are not suitable for diabetics. All Senokot products are gluten-free and therefore suitable for coeliacs. All senokot products are suitable for vegetarians. They do not contain nuts or genetically modified products. Senokot syrup IS also lactose-free.

Can Senokot be taken for long-term use?

Senokot should only be taken for the relief of occasional or non-persistent constipation. If symptoms persist for longer than three days, consult your doctor.

What is the active ingredient in Senokot?

Senokot Tablets and Syrup contain a standardised preparation of Senna derived from the pods of the Senna plant. Senna has been used for many centuries as a natural remedy for constipation and it has a long, history of efficacy and tolerability.

How quickly does Senokot work?

Senokot Tablets, Syrup and Granules usually work within 8-12 hours.

How does Senna work?

Senna contains sennosides (also known as "anthraquinone glycosides"), active ingredients also found in foods such as rhubarb, which in themselves have no activity in the upper gut. In the bowel, however, they are activated by bacteria present, and are able to gently stimulate the nerves which regulate bowel movement. Will Senokot stop absorption of other medication or food?

Senokot Tablets and Syrup work specifically in the colon, therefore should not affect absorption of other medication or food. It would, however, be sensible to consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medication.
